What is the Grassroots model?

The Grassroots model focuses on age appropriate development. At U8 to U10, learning, repetition, confidence, and enjoyment are prioritized over standings or results.

What is the purpose of Grassroots?

Grassroots is designed to make soccer fun first. At U8 to U10, players learn best when they are active, supported, and enjoying the game. The purpose of Grassroots is to build confidence, develop strong foundational skills, and create a positive learning environment that supports long term growth in the sport. We prioritize development, participation, and equal opportunity so every player can improve while having fun.

What does festival style game play mean?

Festival style game play means players take part in multiple short games designed to maximize touches, participation, learning, and enjoyment. This format removes standings pressure and supports development through repetition and play.

How often are Jamborees held?

The program includes one scheduled Jamboree per registration block. Each registration block is a two month block.

What is a Jamboree?

A Jamboree is a festival style event where players participate in multiple short games in a single day. There are no standings or rankings. The focus is participation, learning, and development.

What does Jamboree style game play mean?

Jamboree style game play means short games in a festival format with a development first approach. Games are designed to support learning and enjoyment. Standings and rankings are not used.

What is a Game Leader?

Instead of a traditional referee, a Game Leader guides play, supports learning, and helps players understand rules in a positive and development focused way.

How are coaches and Game Leaders supported?

Grassroots sessions are delivered by qualified FC Northwest coaching staff. Coaches and Game Leaders are supported by the FC Northwest Technical Team to ensure consistent, age appropriate delivery aligned with club development standards.

What does station based training mean?

Sessions are divided into four activity stations. The field is split into four quadrants, with one structured activity in each quadrant. Players rotate every 10 to 15 minutes to maximize ball contact, learning repetition, and engagement.

Are players placed on permanent teams?

No. Players rotate regularly within their training group. This supports social development and reduces perceived hierarchy.

Are there tryouts?

No. Grassroots registration is open and non selective for eligible players within the FC Northwest catchment.

What is the coach to player ratio?

FC Northwest maintains a target coach to player ratio of approximately 8:1 to 12:1 within U8 to U10 programming. Ratios may be adjusted as needed based on group size, field layout, and safety considerations.

What equipment is required?
  • Soccer ball (age appropriate size)
  • Shin guards are required at all sessions
  • Water bottle clearly labelled with the player’s name
  • Indoor gym sessions require indoor gym shoes or indoor soccer shoes. Cleats are not permitted in gym facilities.
  • Outdoor grass or turf sessions require soccer cleats.
